Need to leave the house, no energy for it
Some days you need to be out of the apartment more than you need to do anything in particular. The trick is a destination that asks nothing of you: a bookstore chair, a museum bench, a matinee seat, a pool lane. The list starts with one thing to do inside that counts as a win, then goes outside in order of how much it asks of you. None of it asks much.
Fix the one thing
The drawer that sticks, the shelf that's crooked, the one box you never unpacked. One hour, one thing, done.
- Best when
- A low-energy afternoon when leaving the house feels like too much
- Cheaper
- Free. If it needs a $4 part, the hardware store trip is the outing.
- Skip it if
- You'll start three things. Pick one, finish it, stop.
- Bring
- A screwdriver and a trash bag.
A long walk with one podcast
An hour on foot with one episode, start to finish. You come back with the problem smaller than it was.
- Best when
- Morning before the day starts, or the hour before sunset
- Cheaper
- Free. A coffee at the turnaround point is the whole budget.
- Skip it if
- You'll check email at every red light. Leave the phone on airplane mode.
- Bring
- Headphones, water, shoes you can do five miles in.
One hour in an independent bookstore
The staff picks shelf, a chair in the back, one book bought or none. A full reset in sixty minutes.
- Best when
- Any afternoon; evenings often have a free author event
- Cheaper
- Browse free, buy used, or note the title and put a library hold on it.
- Skip it if
- You'll buy five books and read none. Cap it at one.
- Bring
- A list of what you've been meaning to read.
Weekday matinee
A half-empty theater, a cheap ticket, and you're back outside by 4 pm.
- Best when
- Weekdays before 4 pm
- Cheaper
- Discount Tuesday at most chains drops tickets to $6–8 all day.
- Skip it if
- You want to talk to someone. You'll be shushed.
- Bring
- A coffee. Concessions are where the money goes.
Walk the whole food hall before choosing
Ten kitchens under one roof, a lap to look at all of them, then the one you kept thinking about.
- Best when
- Weekday lunch or early evening, before the line
- Cheaper
- Share two plates across three stalls instead of one entrée each.
- Skip it if
- You're indecisive. The lap makes it worse.
- Bring
- An open mind about eating at a counter next to strangers.
One wing of the art museum
An hour with one collection, a bench in front of one painting, and out before your feet hurt.
- Best when
- Weekday afternoons or the free evening
- Cheaper
- Nearly every big museum has a free day or evening monthly. Libraries lend passes too.
- Skip it if
- You're going to try to see all of it. Don't.
- Bring
- Nothing. Bags get checked anyway.
Lap swim at the public pool
Forty minutes of water and no phone. Fixes a hangover, a heat wave, or a mood that wouldn't move.
- Best when
- Early morning lap hours or lunchtime
- Cheaper
- City pools often have a free hour or a resident rate. Rec centers sell ten-swim punch cards.
- Skip it if
- You can't swim a length. Try water walking in the shallow lane instead; it counts.
- Bring
- Goggles, a lock, flip-flops.
