Want to be alone for a while
Wanting to be alone is a plan, not a mood to apologize for. The question is where: at home with the phone off, or out in a place where nobody will talk to you. Both are below. A garden at opening, a pool lane, a bookstore chair, a matinee seat, a bath with an album. Ordered from staying in to going out, and nothing here involves a conversation.
The book you put on hold
Phone off, one chair, the book you've been meaning to read for a year. Two chapters tonight is a win.
- Best when
- After 9 pm, when the day has stopped asking things
- Cheaper
- Library holds are free. E-book holds arrive on your phone, which is fine, with notifications off.
- Skip it if
- You're going to read on the phone with notifications on. Then it's not this.
- Bring
- A lamp that's actually bright enough.
A bath and one whole album
Forty-five minutes, the door closed, an album from start to finish without skipping. The cheapest spa in the country.
- Best when
- Late, after everything else
- Cheaper
- Free. A $3 bag of epsom salt is the only upgrade worth buying.
- Skip it if
- You only have a shower. Then it's the album, lying on the floor.
- Bring
- A speaker outside the bathroom, not in it.
A long walk with one podcast
An hour on foot with one episode, start to finish. You come back with the problem smaller than it was.
- Best when
- Morning before the day starts, or the hour before sunset
- Cheaper
- Free. A coffee at the turnaround point is the whole budget.
- Skip it if
- You'll check email at every red light. Leave the phone on airplane mode.
- Bring
- Headphones, water, shoes you can do five miles in.
One hour in an independent bookstore
The staff picks shelf, a chair in the back, one book bought or none. A full reset in sixty minutes.
- Best when
- Any afternoon; evenings often have a free author event
- Cheaper
- Browse free, buy used, or note the title and put a library hold on it.
- Skip it if
- You'll buy five books and read none. Cap it at one.
- Bring
- A list of what you've been meaning to read.
The botanical garden, early
Paths, benches, a conservatory, and nobody talking. A place to be alone outdoors without being in the woods.
- Best when
- Weekday mornings, right at opening
- Cheaper
- Many gardens are free; others have free weekday mornings or a free day monthly.
- Skip it if
- You wanted an activity. This is a place to sit.
- Bring
- A book and a coffee in a lidded cup.
Lap swim at the public pool
Forty minutes of water and no phone. Fixes a hangover, a heat wave, or a mood that wouldn't move.
- Best when
- Early morning lap hours or lunchtime
- Cheaper
- City pools often have a free hour or a resident rate. Rec centers sell ten-swim punch cards.
- Skip it if
- You can't swim a length. Try water walking in the shallow lane instead; it counts.
- Bring
- Goggles, a lock, flip-flops.
Weekday matinee
A half-empty theater, a cheap ticket, and you're back outside by 4 pm.
- Best when
- Weekdays before 4 pm
- Cheaper
- Discount Tuesday at most chains drops tickets to $6–8 all day.
- Skip it if
- You want to talk to someone. You'll be shushed.
- Bring
- A coffee. Concessions are where the money goes.
A drop-in yoga class
An hour where someone else decides what you do with your body. Good for a mind that won't stop.
- Cost
- $15–25 drop-in
- Best when
- Early morning or 6 pm, any day
- Cheaper
- Community classes at most studios are $5–10. First-class deals are common.
- Skip it if
- You'll compare yourself to the person in front. Take the back row.
- Bring
- A mat if you have one; rental is $2.
