A weekend with no money
A broke weekend is a solved problem if you know what's free: parks, markets, galleries, library events, run clubs, museum free days. None of this is a consolation prize. Half the people at the gallery walk could afford a $200 dinner and chose this instead. Everything on this list is $0, or $0 if you want it to be.
A long walk with one podcast
An hour on foot with one episode, start to finish. You come back with the problem smaller than it was.
- Best when
- Morning before the day starts, or the hour before sunset
- Cheaper
- Free. A coffee at the turnaround point is the whole budget.
- Skip it if
- You'll check email at every red light. Leave the phone on airplane mode.
- Bring
- Headphones, water, shoes you can do five miles in.
The farmers market, slowly
A loop with samples, a coffee, a bunch of flowers you didn't need, and a reason to be up on a Saturday.
- Best when
- Saturday or Sunday, first hour after opening
- Cheaper
- Free to walk. Vendors discount at the end of the market to clear stock.
- Skip it if
- You hate crowds with strollers. Go at opening.
- Bring
- A tote bag and small bills.
A thrift store crawl with a $20 cap
Three stores, one afternoon, twenty dollars. The cap makes it a game instead of shopping.
- Best when
- Weekday afternoons, when the racks have just been restocked
- Cheaper
- Thrift chains run a half-off color tag each week. Ask which color.
- Skip it if
- You need to find something specific. Thrift is for finding what you didn't know you wanted.
- Bring
- A measuring tape if you're looking at furniture.
The botanical garden, early
Paths, benches, a conservatory, and nobody talking. A place to be alone outdoors without being in the woods.
- Best when
- Weekday mornings, right at opening
- Cheaper
- Many gardens are free; others have free weekday mornings or a free day monthly.
- Skip it if
- You wanted an activity. This is a place to sit.
- Bring
- A book and a coffee in a lidded cup.
A free library talk
A local historian, an author, a beekeeper. An hour in a quiet room learning something you'll bring up at dinner.
- Best when
- Weeknight evenings, 6 or 7 pm
- Cheaper
- Free. Everything the library does is free. That's the point of it.
- Skip it if
- You need it to be exciting. It's interesting, which is different.
- Bring
- A library card, so you can walk out with the author's book.
First Friday gallery walk
A dozen galleries open late, free wine in plastic cups, and art you can argue about on the sidewalk.
- Best when
- The first Friday of the month, 6–9 pm, in most cities
- Cheaper
- Free, including the wine. Dinner after is where you spend.
- Skip it if
- You need the art to be good. Some of it is.
- Bring
- Walking shoes. It's a loop of a mile or two.
A free concert in a park
Summer evenings, a lawn, a band the city paid for, and a picnic you packed.
- Best when
- June through August, check the parks department
- Cheaper
- It's free. Bring your own food and drink where the rules allow.
- Skip it if
- You want a particular band. You get whoever's playing.
- Bring
- A blanket, a low chair, bug spray, something cold.
A run club
Thirty strangers, a three-mile loop, and usually a beer after. The easiest way to meet people in a new city.
- Best when
- Weekday evenings, 6 or 6:30 pm; running stores host them
- Cheaper
- Free. The beer after is the only cost, and it's usually a deal.
- Skip it if
- You haven't run in a year. Most have a walking group; ask.
- Bring
- Running shoes and a layer for after.
