A Sunday with no plans
A Sunday with nothing scheduled either becomes the best day of the week or disappears into a couch. The difference is one thing done before noon. A market, a walk, breakfast somewhere with a counter. After that, the afternoon takes care of itself. The list starts with things that need you out the door by ten and ends with the long, slow options for a day that's already half gone.
The farmers market, slowly
A loop with samples, a coffee, a bunch of flowers you didn't need, and a reason to be up on a Saturday.
- Best when
- Saturday or Sunday, first hour after opening
- Cheaper
- Free to walk. Vendors discount at the end of the market to clear stock.
- Skip it if
- You hate crowds with strollers. Go at opening.
- Bring
- A tote bag and small bills.
Breakfast at a diner counter
Eggs, coffee that gets refilled without asking, a newspaper somebody left. Nobody is judging the hour you got up.
- Best when
- Any morning before 10 am; weekdays are quieter
- Cheaper
- The counter rarely has a wait, and the two-egg special is always the cheapest plate.
- Skip it if
- You want avocado toast. This is hash browns.
- Bring
- Sunglasses, if it's that kind of morning.
The trail at the edge of town
A rail trail, a river path, a greenway. Flat, long, and quiet after the first mile.
- Best when
- Early morning on weekends, before the bikes
- Cheaper
- Free. Bike share ($5–15 a day) makes it a ten-mile loop instead of a three-mile walk.
- Skip it if
- It's past noon in summer. There's no shade on a rail trail.
- Bring
- Water, sunscreen, a hat, a snack for the far end.
Browse a plant nursery
Greenhouses, damp air, rows of things that will probably survive you. Leave with one plant or none.
- Best when
- Weekend mornings, especially in spring
- Cheaper
- The markdown rack of sad plants is $2–5, and most of them recover with water.
- Skip it if
- You already have a windowsill of dead ones. Buy a pothos.
- Bring
- Nothing. They'll give you a box.
The zoo at opening time
The first hour: animals up and moving, paths empty, nobody's stroller in your shins. Leave by noon.
- Best when
- Opening time, weekday if possible
- Cheaper
- Free days monthly at many zoos; libraries lend passes; residents often get a discount.
- Skip it if
- It's over 90°F. The animals hide and so should you.
- Bring
- Water, a hat, good shoes. It's three miles of walking.
The botanical garden, early
Paths, benches, a conservatory, and nobody talking. A place to be alone outdoors without being in the woods.
- Best when
- Weekday mornings, right at opening
- Cheaper
- Many gardens are free; others have free weekday mornings or a free day monthly.
- Skip it if
- You wanted an activity. This is a place to sit.
- Bring
- A book and a coffee in a lidded cup.
Weekday matinee
A half-empty theater, a cheap ticket, and you're back outside by 4 pm.
- Best when
- Weekdays before 4 pm
- Cheaper
- Discount Tuesday at most chains drops tickets to $6–8 all day.
- Skip it if
- You want to talk to someone. You'll be shushed.
- Bring
- A coffee. Concessions are where the money goes.
A bucket of balls at the driving range
Fifty balls, no scorecard, and the satisfying sound of one in ten going where you meant.
- Cost
- $10–15 a bucket
- Best when
- Weekday afternoons; many ranges are lit until 10 pm
- Cheaper
- A small bucket is enough. Club rental is usually a few dollars or free.
- Skip it if
- Your back is already a problem.
- Bring
- A glove if you have one. You don't need one.
